God is for God - Notes from Matt Chandler's Message on 8/13/2011

God is about God. God is for God. There are multiple examples in the Bible where people desired death. 2 Corin. 1:8 - Paul felt despair to the point of not wanting to live anymore. Mark 13:44 - Jesus says that his soul is troubled unto death.

To be 99% known isn't enough. Don't let Satan have even 1% of you to be hidden from others. He's a roaming lion, looking for someone to devour.

We combat darkness by being fully known—confession and repentance are for our protection from the enemy and despair. Community was given by God for both light and dark times in your life.

Tragedy gives you a moment of clear vision—you start noticing things and seeing things that you ignored previously when you were in a routine. Routine = reflex, you forget why you got into the routine to begin with.

What are we doing here? What is this all about, ultimately, as a Church? What is God doing? What is the mission of God? What is God after?

Often we answer this wrong. It's not about us! It's about Him, his glory, and is only about us in as much as the transformation he creates in is reflects back HIS beauty and power. Ezekiel 35

God is for you and loves you and protects and grows you DESPITE you. Psalm 23

"The lord is my Shepard. I shall not. He makes me lie down in green pastures He leads me beside still waters He restores my soul He leads me in the path of righteousness For HIS NAME'S SAKE"

God's motivation for bring David good things is for magnifying his own glory. He does what he does for the sake of his name.

Cat and Dog theology ------------------------------- Cat - he feeds me and takes care of me and loves me - therefore I must be God Dog - he feeds me and takes care of me and loves me - therefore He must be God

Westminster Chatichism ----------------------------------- The chief goal of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. (And we will bring glory to God by either being a trophy of his grace or a vessel of his wrath)

Glory - in Hebrew means "the weight" of God

Jonathan Edwards

God's mission is magnifying his glory ------------> Isaiah 4 Jerm. 13 Psalm 106 Romans 9 Elk 20 2 Sam 7 Ezekiel 36 Jn 7:18 Matt 5:16 1 Peter 2:12 Psalm 25:11 Jn. 16:14 Romans 15 - whatever you do, do it ALL for the glory of God 1 Peter 4:11 - serve in such a way to bring glory to God 2 thess:1 Rom 11:6 Rev 21:23 - the glory of God replaces the sun

God is for God. God is about God.

The reason that God isn't being arrogant to be all about God is because, while man puffs himself up to pretend to be all these good thing, God actually IS everything good, all knowing, and eternally alive.

Press into him. Praise him. Enjoy him. The reason you exist is to, with your mouth, with your life, with your job, with your play, bring glory to God.

God isn't glorified by my grudging submission to his rules. god is for my joy, because my joy in him brings glory to his name. Commands in nthe scripture aren't meant to take anything from you but lead you into great joy. Christian hedonism = full, single-minded pursuit of God's glory and my ultimate joy.

Suffering teaches us to learn to enjoy God on a deeper, more realistic level. Pray diligently that when you suffer, God will give you the ability to suffer well and grow you closer to himself.

Acts 5:33ff "and when they heard this they were enraged and want to kill them . . ."

("Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.")

Gods being for his glory brings about my greatest joy, but also the goodness of God in extending grace to me frees me to make much of him.

Rejoice in God regardless of circumstance. Pursue a relationship with God that is deep, and wide, rather than made up only of his stuff. Make much of God and pursue having more and more of him, irrespective of our physical suffering / emotional pain / life struggles.

Eph. 2:1-10

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

If you live life about God, you set yourself free to enjoy life. If you make your life about you, you are imprisoning yourself to other people's actions and treatment of you. God is for God and that's the best news in the universe. Your being saved isn't about your awesomeness but about his awesomeness in saving you.
