Why I'm Thankful for Mitchell Smith, My Father-in-Law

Think of the tallest person you know and then add 4 inches and an awesome beard. That's Mitchell. He's like the Macgyver of Father-in-laws. Since I've known him, he's: fixed every car we've ever owned; fixed our plumbing three times; fixed our a/c twice; replaced a spigget that Jusje accidentallyRipped off; tiled our bathroom floor; installed a bathroom ceiling heater; fixed our kitchen light, our refrigerator, and hot water heater; trimmed our trees; and on and on and on!

At this point, I'm pretty sure the man could fix the national deficit with only a paper clip! He's definitely the first person we (and everyone else, for that matter) call in a crisis. And what's more impressive than all of his ridiculous fix-it savvy is his incredible servant's heart. He truly gives of himself 100% to serving others, whether that be meeting their physical needs or providing them with spiritual advice and guidance. Mitchell is one in a million: both level-headed--grounded in wisdom and knowledge of The Lord--and loving, serving with every joule of energy he possesses.

Whenever I think of Mitchell, I'm reminded of this passage in Romans:

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. - Romans 12:9-13

If I had to sum up my favorite thing about Mitchell, it would be this: he loves the Lord with his head, heart, and hands, leaving no task unfinished or brother uncared for.

Mitchell, we all love you so much and can't imagine how we'd manage without you! Thank you for being a servant-leader and for demonstrating Christ's love in all you do! I'm so proud that my sons have you for a granddaddy and rolemodel!
