"13 They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel,
14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tested God in the desert.
15 And He gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul." - Psalm 106:13-15
What is leanness of the soul? What does a lean soul look like? I spent much of my lunch break today pondering this question. Since a full body is satiated, satisfied, and content, it seems a "lean" body would display the opposite traits. Instead of contentment, the lean soul would be dissatisfied, hungering for nourishment but finding none.
In a way, this too was mercy, since in finding no satisfaction in their futile pursuits, the Israelites might return to the only source of fullness, that is God.
My prayer this week is that God WOULD NOT put "leanness" into our souls. May he instead gorge our spirits with his goodness and grace that we might shout praises to his glorious name!
