What We Read - February 2017 -Part 1
Here are a few of our favorite books we read in February 2017!
Ladies's Drawing Night, by Julia Rothman
Food Anthology, written and illustrated by Julia Rothman
Josephine, by Patricia Hruby Powell; Illustrated by Christian Robinson
For black history month, Noah Boa and I have been reading Josephine, a beautifully illustrated book about the fabulous dancer Josephine Baker. It's both heartbreaking and wonderful to see my child struggle to grasp why fear, ignorance, + prejudice caused so much harm and violence. Heartbreaking that he even needs to know about this history (which feels more and more relevant lately). Wonderful that he so completely and unconsciously loves his friends regardless of their skin or cultural differences. He keeps saying, "but those laws were so silly! Why would anyone make people drink only at one fountain because of their color? What if they had blue or purple skin? Aren't blue skinned people thirsty too?" Out of the mouthes of babes... #blacklivesmatter
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll; Illustrated by Anna Bond
Nature Anthology, written and illustrated by Julia Rothman
